EYFS, the Early Years Foundation Stage is the statutory curriculum framework used across England’s early years settings, and it’s what Westfield’s entire teaching approach is built on. It’s respected internationally because it doesn’t chase early academic performance for its own sake; it focuses on building the foundational skills, communication, physical confidence, emotional regulation, and curiosity that everything else in school later depends on.

EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stage
All teaching at Westfield Nursery is based on sound knowledge and understanding of the UK ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’
Curriculum. This concentrates on 7 areas of learning that are equally vital to children’s development.
Prime Areas of Learning
- Communication & Language: Listening, understanding and expressing themselves with growing confidence.
- Physical Development: Fine motor skills (holding a crayon) and gross motor skills (climbing, running, balancing).
- Personal, Social & Emotional Development: Making friends, managing feelings, building self-belief.
Specific Areas of Learning
- Literacy: Early mark-making, phonics awareness, and a love of stories.
- Mathematics: Counting, shapes, patterns and problem-solving through play.
- Understanding the World: Curiosity about people, places, technology and the natural world.
- Expressive Arts & Design: Art, music, movement and imaginative play.
